Spiritual Direction.

Spiritual Direction is an important part of pursuing the spiritual life, and has for a long time been ignored by the Episcopal Church. The Roman Catholic Church did much to preserve and continue it while the Protestant Churches got sidetracked into discussions about biblical interpretation and simultaneously devalued anything the Roman Catholics did.

Largely due to Cursillo's rapid growth in the Episcopal, Methodist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian Churches, with its emphasis on spiritual direction, interest in this ancient spiritual practice was renewed. Fr. Kenneth Leech, priest of the church of England, published a milestone book, Soul Friend, in 1979, which discussed spiritual direction in historic terms and helped spur interest in the process.

The Pecos Benedictine Monastery began their School for Spiritual Directors about 1975 and began graduating 50 spiritual directors every 6 months. I graduated from their School in 1986 and began teaching the material in the Diocese of Texas, starting with St. George's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, in Lent of 1985, after finishing their first 4 weeks' worth of the course.

In spiritual direction, I help directees find their preferred meditation style and teach them additional means of meditation, prayer, dream work, and generally help them with their walk with the Lord.
